How to Identify Real Solid Wood Furniture Before You Buy

18 July 2026 • 5 min read

Close view of a solid wood wardrobe door with visible grain

Most furniture sold online as 'wooden' is engineered board with a printed or veneered surface. It looks convincing in photographs and often falls apart within a few years of Indian humidity. Solid wood behaves differently, and there are simple ways to tell the two apart before money changes hands.

Look at the end grain

On a solid wood panel, the grain visible on the face continues around the edge. On veneered board, the pattern stops abruptly at the edge or is covered by a thin edge band. Open a drawer and look at the top edge of its side panel — that is usually where shortcuts show.

Check the weight and the sound

Solid wood is heavy for its size and gives a dull, dense sound when tapped. Particle board sounds hollow and light. This one check separates most products in a showroom within seconds.

Ask about the joinery

Mortise and tenon, dowel and corner-block joinery indicate furniture built to be repaired and reassembled. Cam locks and knock-down fittings indicate flat-pack construction. A manufacturer will tell you which joints are used; a reseller usually cannot.

At Aaradhay we manufacture in seasoned solid wood at our own unit, and we are happy to confirm wood type, moisture treatment and joinery before you place an order.
